Calvert E. Norland letter : Santa Ana, Calif., to E.O. Essig : ALS, 1938 Dec. 19.

Concerns the possible history of ownership of this pre-publication copy of vol. 1, part I (Essay on classification) of Contributions to the natural history of the United States of America (Boston, 1857), presented to John L. LeConte by the author, Louis Agassiz. Letter was originally enclosed with this book which Norland sent to Essig, his former professor, as a Christmas gift, and speculates on the additional inscription of Newton B. Pierce, plant pathologist and friend of Agassiz.

Swiss-American zoologist and geologist. Professor of zoology and geology at Harvard University. Louis Agassiz was born in Môtier-en-Vuly, Switzerland.
